Cenotes: Natural Treasures

Cenotes is abysses, in karstic environment, totally where partially filled with a superficial coat of fresh water and sometimes with a lower coat of sea water if they inform with the ocean that we find essentially in North America and power plant, and more particularly in the peninsula of Yucatán.
The name Cenote is from the Mayan vocabulary tz’onot which means ” an abyss “, is a sacred place where were practised the rites and the ceremonies Maya.
The life of the Mayas turned enormously around the cenotes which for them was crowned. They placed their temples at the edge of these wonders of nature to grant them any sort of offerings because the cenote gave them a vital element: water.


The age of cenotes depends of the type, if you visit the subterranean cenotes, it’s one of the youngest which for the greater part is connected with the sea, the brightness of the water is different according to the present ores.
A semiopen cenote is one average age old, for the greater part they are of a fresh water and the water is crystalline, this cenotes is perfected to snorkeling.
Some cenotes possess rich variety in flora and fauna of sweet endangered water.
Besides having crystalline and fresh waters; cenotes has formations of stalactites, because of the water which having fallen dissolves calcareous rocks and having created these “rocks” which form after long period of time, and leash of the forms deserving of artist.

The formation of stalactites requires of long period, to grow of 2.5 cms they need between 4,000 by 5,000 years.
