One of the most recently asked questions of travelers is “Is it safe to travel in Mexico?”.
Mexico is one of the most popular countries in Central America, it is known for its many Mayan and Aztec temples, for its endless beautiful beaches, for its vibrant colonial cities, for its diverse wildlife and for its nature, because Mexico has besides the jungle also many mountains and volcanoes to offer. Of course, many tourists also come to the land of the Mayas and Aztecs to get to know the interesting culture and taste all the specialities.
But tourists are more and more worried about travelling to Mexico, because there are a lot of bad news about the country in the media. There are constant reports of shootings and stabbings. Of course, there are some states in Mexico that should be avoided (as shown on the map), but the fact is that in 99.9% of the cases, tourists are not involved and are not generally the target of the perpetrators. All the violence takes place between the so-called “narcos”, the drug cartels. Drug cartels fight each other; a lot of money is involved. Travellers, however, do not notice this violence.
I myself have been living in Cancun for 4 months now, as I am doing an internship at EcoColors Tours. I have explored all the highlights of the peninsula and have always felt safe. I rather felt the opposite of insecurity, because the people I met were all warm, helpful and friendly.
The fact is that the tourism industry, especially on the Yucatan peninsula, one of the biggest sources of income is. For this reason, the government tries to do everything in its power to ensure the safety of the tourists. Especially in Cancun and Playa del Carmen you can see a lot of police and military. In the end the drug cartels don’t want anything from the tourists, because eventually the tourists are the “buyers”. Most of the drugs are finally brought to the USA.
Of course you should, as in so many countries in the world, use common sense. Open showing of jewelry, money or similar should be avoided, as well as entering unlit, dark side streets or alleys and if possible, one should not be alone at night.
Mexico is a breathtakingly diverse country, with great people, an interesting history and beautiful nature. There is no reason not to travel to Mexico. Before you believe all the media, you might want to ask tourists who were really there and could get an idea of the situation. Nowadays, no place is 100% safe, the attacks in Europe have also increased and accidents can happen anywhere. In fact, the majority of accidents happen at home.
